New West cop found guilty of assaulting delivery man

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The New Westminster police officer accused of assaulting a newspaper delivery man in downtown Vancouver two years ago has been found guilty of assault.

Jeffrey Klassen was charged after three off-duty officers got into a fight with Firoz Khan as he was delivering papers outside the Hyatt Hotel on Burrard Street.

David Eby with the BC Civil Liberties Association says Khan’s testimony at Klassen’s trial was disturbing.  “The victim saying police told him, ‘We’re police officers, you’re not going to be able to hold us accountable.  We can do whatever we want.”

Klassen admitted to using force against Khan, but argued it was reasonable.  He remains on paid suspension from the New Westminster Police Department until an internal investigation is finished.

A second officer, Cst. Griffin Gillan from West Vancouver, pleaded guilty earlier and was given a conditional sentence.
