Solving student overcrowding in Surrey

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Student overcrowding is so bad in Cloverdale that the Surrey School District is taking matters into its own hands.  It has decided to re-open an elementary school that was closed in 2009.

Former East Clayton Elementary School is owned by the City of Surrey and will re-open in September to address capacity issues at Hazelgrove Elementary School.

Things are so bad right now Doug Strachan with the Surrey School District says there are 14 portables on site.

“It’s not something that we need to consult with the Ministry [of Education] on. We’ve used that school before and we have the ability to use it again.  We need the provincial government to provide funding for new schools but in the meantime we have to address the growth in any way that we can.”

Over 4,000 students have come into the Clayton area of Cloverdale over the last four years.
