Study to look into impact of Hornby Street bike lane

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A consultant is being brought in to look at the impact that bike lanes are having on Hornby Street businesses.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson says figuring out the positives and negatives of the bikes lanes has been a bit of a challenge. “It’s all part of the bike lane trial and deciding what changes need to be made and whether it stays permanently. We want to be sure that we understand what those impacts are on the businesses involved.”

Robertson admits it will be difficult to separate harm caused specifically by the bike lane with the HST and other economic challenges coming in at the same time. “We’ve got challenges for businesses over these last couple of years, so trying to figure out exactly what component is related to bike lanes, is going to be the challenge of the study.”

He says the city likely won’t have definitive answers until at least next year.
