Survey: many doctors keep working past retirement age

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canada’s workforce is getting older, but it looks like the healthcare system might avoid mass-retirements in at least one critically important area. A new study from the Canadian Institute for Health Information shows many doctors keep working past the traditional retirement age.

CIHI’s Geoff Ballinger says the healthcare system is spared considerable hardship, thanks to these doctors who keep working. “It is not going to be an avalanche in terms of physicians leaving the profession, it’s going to be more of a glacier. “

The study shows that one in ten Canadian doctors is already 65 or over, and 20 per cent are 60 plus. The average age has finally stabilized at 50, thanks to the opening of more seats at medical schools across the country.
