Langara College instructors told to withhold student grades

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Langara College instructors have been told by their Faculty Association to not submit any student grades until a labour agreement is reached, but some students say it’s unfair they are the ones being punished.

Ashley, who is finishing her journalism diploma program at Langara, feels her career is being put on hold. She says she is applying for jobs right now, but doesn’t know if she can say on her resume that she’s graduated. “I kind of feel like I am in limbo. And it’s not the instructors’ fault, I don’t think. But it’s definitely putting the student body in a compromising position.”

She says she never received any correspondence from the school about her grades being withheld. Instead, it was her friend who let her know.

But, Langara Faculty Association President  Lynn Carter says it’s the least harmful way to put pressure on the employer. “We’ve asked our faculty to withhold the submission of the final grades as another form of job action. Right now, negotiations are stalled, and we really need to get back to the table and get a collective agreement.”

She says students who are anxious about their grades can talk to the school’s president or college board.

Last month, staff served a 72-hour strike notice, but classes were not greatly affected.

It’s not clear when the two parties will be back at the negotiating table.
