The Canucks are keeping an eye on the Coyotes-Winnipeg story

VANCUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canucks are keeping an eye on the potential move of the Phoenix Coyotes to Winnipeg. Vancouver would have to move their farm team, the Manitoba Moose, if the Coyotes re-locate to Winnipeg.

The president of the American Hockey League David Andrews tells News1130 Sports his league is keeping a close eye on the situation in Phoenix, “We are preparing for the possibility that Phoenix could end up in Winnipeg.”

Andrews explains he’s been preparing for this possibility for two years. “We have contingency plans relative to our own divisional and conference alignments and schedule.”

The AHL says it would be nice to know quickly whether the Coyotes are Winnipeg bound because moving a franchise is not an easy thing to do says Andrews, “The middle of May is kind of the drop dead date for us in terms of preparations for the following year. We do have a couple of strong possibilities, couple of markets that really are interested in having an AHL franchise, so the potential is there to activate Manitoba’s AHL club somewhere else if need be.”

There is also another option: the league could suspend the Moose franchise for a year and put the Moose players somewhere else. Andrews says he is working with the Canucks on what their options may be.
