Vaisakhi parade draws thousands to Vancouver’s Little India

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Streets of Vancouver’s Little India have come alive today for the annual Vaisakhi celebration on Main and Fraser Street that has drawn thousands of people.

They are marking Vaisakhi with traditional outfits and a parade, especially popular is the free food served up by the locals.

Sarbjit Manjat is part of a team that started cooking up the traditional food in a garage last night. She figures they have fed thousands today. “That is what God gave us, so we can provide [it] to people.”

When the pre-made meals run on, pizza and soft drinks are doled out.

Vaisakhi is the time the Sikh community recognizes the birth of their religion and celebrates the harvest. Unlike in previous years when the parade sparked some controversy for featuring images of Sikh extremists, this year organizers made sure there was nothing offensive about the procession.
