Poll: retailer’s environmental record matters to BC shoppers

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Just in time for Earth Day, a new poll from Ipsos Reid shows a retailer’s environmental record is a major factor for BC shoppers, when choosing a store, but that number is actually down from previous years.

Two thirds of those surveyed said environment is an important consideration when choosing a store.

It’s a significant majority, but Catherine Dawson with Ipsos says the environment as a shopping issue has actually dropped ten points in the last three years. “We’re really seeing the decline in how many people feel that it’s a really important criterion for them. Obviously other things have really come to the floor.”

Concern over the economy increased in previous years, as the environment lost ground as an issue for shoppers. But for some reason, the numbers haven’t reversed, as the economy has picked up strength.

Dawson says other problems are distracting shoppers too. “We’re seeing in another poll that other issues are coming back, so for example, health care… is returning as more of an issue.”

Dawson says a lot of shoppers have also admitted they find it difficult to judge how well most retailers are doing when it comes to the environment.
