Vancouver Craft Beer Week

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Pacific Northwest is ground zero for the craft beer movement and Vancouver has certainly been a big part of that scene. We are celebrating the city’s contributions, tapping into Craft Beer Week — a nine-day festival celebrating craft beer and good food.

Chris Bjerrisgaard with Craft Beer Week says the first cask will be tapped today and the “brew of honour” is a collaboration from 28 different brewers at East Vancouver’s R&B Brewing.

“The Cascadian Dark Ale is going to be served in the cask in many places, including at the Alibi Room on opening night,” he explains. “Cask ale, in general, is a great way for local brewers to really showcase ‘one offs’ and add some adjuncts like coffee or whisky or any kind of flavour enhancers to really just play around and experiment.”

Vancouver has a gold star beer heritage, says Bjerrisgaard. “In a lot of ways, the scene started here with John Mitchell and the Horseshoe Bay Brewing Company.”

“There are places like Granville Island and Sailor Hagar’s, which is now no longer operating as a a brew pub but head brewer Gary Lohin and his Red Racer Beer and other Central City Brewing products are just going off the charts right now,” he adds.

Tastings, food pairings, competitions, celebrations — all told, more than 55 breweries will be showcasing the best of the best at more than 70 venues, with local chefs eager to pair them with their own unique culinary creations.

Vancouver Craft Beer Week is May 6-14.
