Dziekanski’s mom somewhat disappointed at charges

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – News that four Mounties involved in the Robert Dziekanski Tasering in 2007 are being charged with perjury comes as a bit of a disappointment for Dziekanski’s mom.

Walter Kosteckyj represents Zofia Cisowski. “She was disappointed that the police offices aren’t being charged in relation to the incident itself, but pleased that charges are being laid against the officers and that they are being held responsible for their actions,” he explains, pointing out perjury charges are significant, and the courts take them very seriously.

And he adds she is troubled that most of the officers still have their jobs.  “Three of these police officers continue to be employed by the RCMP, and continue to be paid even though at the Braidwood Inquiry they were found to be not credible,” he notes.

The perjury charges stem from testimony that each officer gave at the Braidwood Inquiry, examining the 2007 death of the Polish immigrant at YVR, after concerns were raised about the officers’ version of events.

Special prosecutor Richard Peck has concluded that charges related to the incident itself are unlikely to lead to a conviction.

Crown says more details from the special prosecutor’s report will be released soon.

The four officers involved are Cpl. Benjamin (Monty) Robinson, Const. Gerry Rundel, Const. Bill Bentley, and Const. Kwesi Millington.

Robinson will have to stand trial next month in an unrelated matter.  The Mountie is suspended with pay after he was involved in a crash that killed 21-year-old Orion Hutchinson in 2008.
