Underage Facebook users on the rise

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Millions of kids are lying about their age in order to get a Facebook profile.

The powerhouse social networking site doesn’t let anyone under 13 sign up for an account. But a Consumer Reports survey finds 7.5-million of Facebook’s half a billion users are under 13 years old. Five million of those are under 10.

It’s raising concerns over the threats to which young users might be exposed.

The same survey finds those underage accounts are getting little supervision from parents, with many knowing that their young kids are using the site, but not being concerned about it. It says that’s led to about a million kids being bullied over the Internet and greater risks of malware attacks, computer viruses, and identity theft.
