No. “13” homes sell for less: study

By

TORONTO, On. – A study in the United Kingdom found that the number 13 is bad luck, even in the real estate market.

Zoopla, a UK property website, revealed that homes with that “unlucky” number sell for £4,000 (about $6,000 Canadian dollars) less than the same house next door.

The findings showed that properties in Britain indicated the average cost of a home at number 13 was about $321,983 (CAD), but the average value of an identical home at numbers 11, 12, 14 or 15 was $328,144 (CAD).

In Ontario, residents living on 13th Street in south Etobicoke admitted they thought twice before moving there, while others scoffed at the idea of an unlucky street.

“They might have briefly thought it’s a superstitious number, but I didn’t really think much of it,” one 13th Street resident said.

“I had hesitations about moving here in the beginning because I thought a lot of my customers might not like to come to 13th Street – you know, they might think that there is something wrong,” said another.

The number 13 has long been linked to bad luck, and those suffering from a fear of the number have “triskaidekaphobia.”
