Grow your own food, urban gardening takes off

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – From herbs planted in a sunny kitchen window, to tomatoes on the balcony.  News1130 is providing some insight on the explosion of urban agriculture.

David Tracey wrote the book Urban Agriculture: Ideas and Designs for the New Food Revolution.

He insists you don’t have to have a green thumb to grow your own food.  “I tell people, ‘Don’t worry about it, even if you’ve killed all your houseplants, you just have to provide all the proper conditions.  Sun, some soil, water and the seed knows what to do.”

Tracey adds growing your own food is cheaper, and you can be sure of its nutritional value.  “You start to develop a greater understanding of what real food tastes like [and] you might take an interest then in your farmer’s market.”

He recognizes that space makes urban farming a challenge in the city, so Tracey suggests starting out small with just a pot for herbs.
