Flood fears continue to rise in the Interior

By

QUESNEL (NEWS1130) – With more rain in the forecast, fears over flooding are growing in the Interior.  One home along the Cottonwood River near Quesnel has already been ruined.

George Henderson with CKCQ Radio says several homes along the river are being threatened.

“The worst may be over. While the river came up slightly on Tuesday, the one home that was really threatened was pulled back from the river, the foundation included. So it didn’t go in the river, which, from an environmental standpoint, was a concern. It was destroyed, though. One other home that is threatened is further up the river,” he explains.

The flood watch is on every year, but the last time Henderson remembers something of this magnitude was back in the 80s.

Emergency Management BC says there just aren’t enough resources to protect all the homes at risk.

News 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate has been keeping an eye on the situation and says the rain should taper off on Tuesday.

“There has been more than 22 millimeters of rainfall in the past 24 hours alone.  There is still a weather warning in effect for a further 10 millimeters through the first half of the day, but it is expected to completely taper off by the end of the afternoon.”

Flood warnings are also posted for Baker Creek and the Willow River near Quesnel, while rivers around Salmon Arm and Prince George are expected to rise as well.
