Man arrested after driving semi truck wrong way down highway

CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – Police are looking into drug related charges against a man accused of driving a semi-truck the wrong way down the shoulder of Highway One in Chilliwack over rush hour.

Our newsroom was lighting up with phone calls around 6 O’clock as confused drivers tried to figure out what was happening.

Star Commuter Ben saw the truck along the shoulder near Prest Road and says it was moving pretty fast. “There’s a semi-trailer going westbound in the eastbound lane with police cars in pursuit. Police cars are in the correct lane, the semi-trailer was doing about…hard to tell. He was going faster than he should have been, let’s put it that way. He was on the shoulder. Pretty interesting.”

RCMP aren’t calling it a police chase, but do say officers pulled the truck over near No. 3 Road after they received calls from concerned drivers.

A 48-year-old Surrey man was then arrested.

Police have recommended criminal charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and are considering a charge of impaired operation by a drug.

Corporal Barb Vincent says it’s amazing nobody was injured. “It’s terribly lucky, as everyone would understand, a semi-trailer traveling westbound on the eastbound lanes of the freeway, fortunately he was on the shoulder from what I understand, but nonetheless, not a good situation.”

The man’s name hasn’t been released.
