VPD targetting heavy drinkers this summer

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The sun is shining, and the long weekend is here; it’s the perfect time to head down to the beach for some fun. But police will be out there, making sure the beach parties don’t get out of hand.

Vancouver Police have officially launched its summer beach patrol. Constable Jana McGuinness says while most people behave themselves, it’s the heavy drinkers who cause problems.

“We’ve had, in the course of the summer of 2010, 7,000 liquor pour-outs,” she tells us. “So, liquor becomes a little bit of an issue at the beach from time to time.”

“We’re not talking about people who are discreetly having a glass of wine with a picnic,” she adds. “We’re talking about people who… consume alcohol in large quantities.”

Expect to see cops on bikes, horses, and ATVs at all public beaches this summer.
