People now allowed to tour Slave Lake

SLAVE LAKE, AB (NEWS1130) – Hot spots and some other safety concerns will likely keep evacuees out of Slave Lake, Alberta for at least another week.

Danielle Garratt says she’s thankful her house is still standing. “We pretty well knew that it had survived the fires. We’re south of the town. We’re fine. We were more concerned about the other people in the community who did lose their homes,” she explains.

She says it’s been devastating for those who did lose everything. “The courage they have is heartwarming. It gives you chills to listen to their experiences. It brings tears to your eyes. They’re obviously upset they didn’t get a lot of sentimental belongings out of their homes.”

About 500 people are touring the damage. Right now crews are digging through the rubble and ash to find people’s possessions as part of the clean-up process.
