Flooding growing worse in the Interior and northwestern BC

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A state of emergency has been declared in a part of the Cariboo region, where water from flooding rivers has covered some rural roads in the Anahim Lake area. Homes in Houston in northwestern BC are also being threatened by rising waters.

Rowena Bastien with emergency operations in the Cariboo says the state of emergency is meant to help people living in thirteen homes.

“They can’t get in or out of their properties. Those people have been contacted and they are not in an immediate need of help. Other people have been very busy piling sand bags.”

The declaration means crews will be dispatched to help with sand bagging.

Meanwhile, Lindsay Carnes with the emergency operations centre in Houston says low lying areas in that city are now under an evacuation alert, thanks to dangerous water levels.

“There are approximately 445 residences in the alert area, and we have six residences that are under an evacuation order.”

She says with warmer weather on the way, they are concerned the snowmelt will worsen the flood situation.
