Other cities won’t be inspecting medical pot growers

LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – Not everyone thinks Surrey’s move to force medical marijuana growers to have permits will work. Council endorsed the plan Monday night to prevent people who are licenced to grow a few plants from growing hundreds. Inspectors will make sure, among other things, that  the level of hydro usage is appropriate.

City of Langley mayor Peter Fassbender says it’s a good idea, but he doesn’t think municipalities should be footing the bill to enforce federal rules governing medicinal pot growing, especially when they can ill afford to.

“The responsibility shouldn’t be pushed back onto local governments. This is a federal piece of legislation that should be fixed and we shouldn’t be the ones to fix it,” he explains, adding that in his city, there aren’t enough by-law officers to enforce a permit system.

Several legal grow ops have been ripped off in Langley over the past year.
