Some Surrey gas stations must offer alternative fuel source

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – New gas stations in Surrey will have to pump out something more than just the regular gasoline, diesel and propane.  They are now required to give out at least one alternative fuel source.

Sources like hydrogen, compressed natural gas or a recharging area for an electric car.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts wants to get ahead of the game.

“The infrastructure isn’t in place [right now].  When we look at what is coming off the assembly line, those will be electric cars, hydrogen cars.  So what we are saying is that we want to be prepared for those vehicles that come onto the market place.”

Watts adds while building an alternative fuel station from scratch can be expensive and adding on to an existing one is not necessary.  Surrey is also the only municipality in Canada to host two municipal hydrogen fuelling stations.
