Livestock thieves now targetting chickens in Abbotsford, too

By

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – The goats have turned into chickens. Livestock thefts are continuing in Abbotsford with more than 500 taken this week alone. But now, police say they’re cracking down.

Cue Officer Leo — AKA Livestock Enforcement Officer —  is now on the case. “[The officer] has made some inroads in identifying individuals who we believe are involved in these crimes that have taken place over the last several months,” says Constable Ian Macdonald.

“They have a mechanism in place to either sell those animals through direct sale, auction, or even on Craigslist,” he adds.

The thieves go after goats, chickens, and even pigeons.

“Pardon the pun, but there seems to be an appetite for livestock and foul as far as criminals are concerned,” explains Macdonald. “We often will look at these as animals and not necessarily as commodities.”

Until arrests are made, MacDonald is recommending farmers start tagging their animals.
