Looking back to the last time Vancouver won the Stanley Cup

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The celebrations were a little calmer, and tickets cost folks just $1 to see the final game. News1130 is taking a look back at the last time the city took the Stanley Cup — as the Vancouver Millionaires in 1915.

“That was the first time the Stanley Cup was won by a western team — period,” explains Jason Beck, curator at the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

“It was not just a big deal in Vancouver, but across Canada. It probably put a few eastern noses out of joint. It was a huge deal, the Denman Arena was sold out, and the crowds were large.”

The Millionaires beat Ottawa in three straight games, as it was a best of five series. “The Senators claimed that it was the sea air out here that sapped the strength in their legs.”

Back then, people took the trolley to the arena and news was only spread by newspaper or word of mouth.

“I can’t remember the scores of each game, but they were all blow outs…it was a butt kicking!” says Beck.
