Postal strike may affect BC next

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Is your postal worker sick or injured? Well, don’t expect a replacement and don’t expect any mail.  Up to 10 percent of mail delivery in this province could be affected.

“Canada Post has sent home all the people they call ‘temporary workers,'” says CUP-W’s National Director for the Pacific Region, John Bail.

Those affected are seasonal workers and casual staff covering other routes. “It’s random. It would depend on where your letter carrier was off work, if they were sick or something like that. Then, you may not get delivery in part of that area or all of that area.”

“There’s also another edict they put out saying that people can’t work past eight hours. They have to bring the mail back and do it the next day.”

He says that means additional delays in the postal service in this province and it isn’t helping negotiations, “It seems to be somewhat malicious on their part. They seem to be lashing out at the workers.”

This comes as Canada Post has turned down the newest offer from the postal workers’ union, which has begun rotating strikes in several cities. The company says the offer is simply too expensive and doesn’t take it into account less mail moving through the system.

Montreal is the latest city to see rolling strikes.  Bail is not ruling out action here in BC.
