Canadians are obsessed with the weather

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Is it going to rain? Do I need sunglasses? What about snow boots?

You could call us weather-obsessed. Nine in ten Canadians check out the highs and lows every day.

The EKOS survey commissioned by Environment Canada finds we worry most about snowstorms, tornadoes, blizzards, and strong winds.

Meteorologist Russ Lacate says there’s one thing people can’t get enough of: “Love it or hate it, snow in the Lower Mainland forecast!”

“If you predict it wrong, the hate mail flows in,” he explains. “If you get it right, people despise you even more.”

Lacate says records are another thing people ask about a lot. “Did we set a record? Vancouverites seem obsessed with the idea of record-breaking weather, be it heat or cold or rain.”

“We tend to wear our weather records like some sort of badge of honour!” he adds.

We may complain about the crappy weather, but the survey finds we are pretty satisfied with our weather information outlets.
