Sheriff shortage causing a backlog in courts

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Courtrooms are overflowing because of a sheriff shortage.  Today, a provincial court judge vented about it at the courthouse on Main Street in Vancouver.

Gregory Rideout wants BC Attorney General Barry Penner to do something to fix the problem and it didn’t take long for that word to travel to Victoria.

NDP Justice Critic Leonard Krog says it’s a big problem with a simple solution.

“The police are out doing their good work catching the bad guys,” Krog said.  “But they’re seeing them walk because there isn’t a system there to actually deal with them.

Penner told us last week there’s no money in the budget to do any more hiring.
