Thousands of pictures, videos of riot sent to police so far

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Police expect to receive hundreds of thousands of images from Wednesday night’s riot in the coming weeks.

The VPD already has thousands of photos and videos from people wanting to identify rioters. “We’re being inundated in a very good way from the public with more than 1,800 tips,” says Constable Jana McGuinness.

So many, in fact, that McGuinness says the website to upload the footage was having trouble handling the load. “Social media is really assisting this investigation, but it’s also complicated now because we have to go through so much material.”

Tim Kelley with Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers says they’ve handled more tips in the past 36 hours than what’s normal in a whole month. “About 230 individual tips… It’s closer to 300 plus now.”

He says people are also ratting out those selling looted merchandise online. Click here for more information on how to submit pictures and videos of the riot to police.

Parents of Young Rioters Could be Liable

Parents of under-age kids caught on camera rioting and looting downtown have reason to be worried.

Civil lawyer Marko Vesely says insurance companies like ICBC could absolutely go after parents. “The insurer then has the ability to pursue that lawsuit on their behalf. And that’s what you see with motor vehicles, but that’s also what you see with property claims. If there’s property insurance then there’s an insurance company that’s had to pay for all that damage, and they might be looking to sue as well.”

Vesely says it’s unlikely parents would be liable in other ways for the actions of their children.
