Former drug addict runs half-marathon for women’s shelter

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A former Downtown Eastside drug addict is celebrating after completing his first half-marathon today.

Brendan McLellan was homeless until 14 months ago, when he made the decision to enter rehab.

He tells News1130 he hopes his efforts to help the Union Gospel Mission (UGM) by running today’s Scotiabank Half-Marathon will inspire others.

“I really wanted to do it for myself, for the UGM, and wanted to be an example for people that are still out there in addiction,” he says. “It’s just been one of a few small miracles that have happened in my life since getting into recovery. It’s just been an absolutely fantastic journey for me.”

McLellan far surpassed his goal to collect $2,000 in pledges, raising a total of $3,340 for the UGM, which is renovating its current facility to serve women and children exclusively.
