Father of Jamie Cliff’s murder victim speaks

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – His son was enthusiastic, fun to be around and never set eyes on his killer. Andrew Gawley’s father says only now can his family finally begin to move on.

“I would say the circumstances would show that it is deserved,” he tells News1130.

Chris Gawley struggles to keep his composure as he speaks about his son Andrew’s death and his son’s killer, Jamie Michael Cliff.

Cliff was handed the maximum penalty of 25 years in prison with no chance of parole today.

He stabbed Gawley’s roomate 26 times before stabbing Andrew in the throat, then setting him on fire in his own bed.

While the family is trying to move on, Gawley says it’s been a long journey through the court system.

“Their focus is dealing with the accused,” he says. “Their focus isn’t on dealing with the families.”

He says he still misses his son’s laugh and enthusiasm.

The only other killer handed the same sentence for second degree murder in BC was Robert Pickton.
