Postal workers battle mail buildup

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Postal workers are still trying to put a dent in the giant stack of mail that built up during the Canada Post Labour dispute, but admit there’s still a lot of work to do.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says the problem is letter carriers aren’t allowed to work overtime, so the mail keeps building up.

Robert Mulvin with the union says each letter carrier is assigned a specific route to follow, and if they can’t make it to the end of that route in an 8-hour shift, they have to return the mail they didn’t deliver at the end of the day. “Any of the boxes that are beyond there on that part of the walk are being sent back. So it could be the same customers not getting their mail day after day.”

He isn’t getting into specifics about how many people haven’t been getting mail.

Mulvin calls the stack of packages, parcels, and letters that have built up at the depot “huge”.
