Both teens and adults disclose too much on Facebook: Study

GUELPH, Ont. – Grown-ups aren’t much different than their kids when it comes to protecting their privacy on Facebook, according to a new study.

The research conducted by a University of Guelph psychology professor and two PhD students involved 288 young Facebook users and 285 users aged of 19 and 71 who completed an online survey at the Ontario Science Centre.

“As the paper revealed, teenagers and their parents – or people who are somewhat older – are certainly not that different when it comes to protecting their privacy, so younger people are not as foolish as we think, or parents are more foolish than we think – either way,” said Guelph professor Serge Desmarais.

Of those surveyed, 35 per cent of the younger group and 29 per cent of the older group were at least somewhat likely to disclose personal information on the social networking site.

The findings, which are already online, will be published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science.
