Guergis broke conflict-of-interest rules: ethics watchdog

By

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – The federal ethics watchdog has found former Ontario MP Helena Guergis broke conflict-of-interest rules. Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson says Guergis contravened two sections of the MPs’ code.

Guergis had written a letter to a municipal politician and council in her riding, asking them to consider a project pitch by a local businessman. At the time, her husband Rahim Jaffer was in talks with that same company about possible dealings in the future.

Dawson says Guergis knew the men had met before and should have refrained from writing the letter.

She also says Guergis broke sections of the conflict code that say members of Parliament shouldn’t use their position to influence a decision that could benefit a family member, or act in a way to further the interest of a family member.
