Final Potter film a bittersweet ending to childhood for some

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – Muggles of all ages poured out of theatres around the Lower Mainland early this morning after midnight showings of Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the final film in the Harry Potter franchise.

We caught up with fans outside the Fifth Avenue Cinemas on Burrard, where reviews were solid and emotions were high.

“This was the most cathartic moment of our childhood ending,” says one young high school graduate. He and his friends say they grew up with the Potter series, first meeting the characters when they were just ten years old.

“I know I cried on my eleventh birthday at midnight because I didn’t get a letter,” says one fan, referring to a letter wizards in the story get, telling students they have been accepted into the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

“It’s just the type of thing that’s been with us since day one,” she explains.

One young woman says she and her friends they cried at least three times during the film. “That’s it — this is the last midnight line-up thing, and I’ve been to all of them!”

For the most part, fan reviews were solid.  They loved the effects, commented on well-developed acting, and called the movie ‘pretty true to the book.’

What’s next? Some say they’re going home to start re-reading the books.  Others hope author J.K. Rowling is working on something new.
