VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As usual, a busy weekend on the sports scene. Especially on Saturday.
 
MLS
 
After a couple of personnel moves this week Whitecaps FC are back in action on the Empire Field pitch versus Real Salt Lake on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM. New Gambian striker Mustapha Jarju will not start, but he could make his Vancouver debut as a substitute.
 
The two teams met in the second game of the Tom Soehn era as head coach with the Caps. The Utah squad won 2-0 at home on June 4.
 
Real Salt Lake is fourth in the Western Conference of MLS, but has games in hand on the three teams they are chasing.
 
The teams will be playing on real grass, which was laid at the PNE ground because of the friendly between the Caps and FA Cup champions Manchester City on Monday.
 
CFL
 
Later on Saturday afternoon, the BC Lions will be in Edmonton to meet the undefeated Eskimos. The Buono Bunch are 0-2 on the season but lost both games by a total of five points.

The BC Lions have placed offensive lineman Jon Hameister-Ries on the nine week injured list with torn tricep.  The team has to fly in rookie Adam Baboulas.
 
The game will mark the debut of veteran receivers Kamau Peterson and Paris Jackson for BC.
 
On the defensive side of the ball, veteran cornerback Davis Sanchez will see some time at safety in the defensive secondary. Rookie cornerback Travis Williams will get a chance to enter the line-up on the corner
 
Kickoff is at 4 PM.
 
NORTHWEST LEAGUE BASEBALL
 
The Vancouver Canadians will wrap a five game series with the Boise Hawks on the weekend at Nat Bailey stadium. First pitch on Saturday night is at 7:05 PM. Fireworks will follow the game. Sunday’s matinee is a 1:05 PM start.

Canadian Open Fastpitch Women’s International Championship

 
Some of the top players and countries in the world are playing in the Canadian Open Fastpitch Women’s International Championship at Softball City in South Surrey.
 
The weekend features the playoff round of the tournament. Canada won the bronze medal at the 2010 World Championships. USA, Japan, Australia and Venezuela are the other national teams taking part.
 
The championship game is scheduled for Sunday night at 6:30 PM on Diamond one at Softball City.
 
CYCLING

 
The BC Superweek of cycling wraps up with the final two stages of the 32nd Tour de White Rock.
 
The Criterium goes Saturday at 4 PM. It’s a speed race that starts at Five Corners and travels around the one kilometre White Rock Elementary circuit. The racers reach speeds of up to 70 km/hr.
 
Sunday features the 130 km Tour de White Rock Road Race.
