Abbotsford Police rescue senior living in squalor

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – Abbotsford Police say they’ll remember the smell forever. Officers and emergency crews had to put on gas masks and wade through a huge mess to get to a 75-year-old man in medical distress yesterday.

Constable Ian MacDonald is careful not to call the man a hoarder. “He was rather isolated and certainly would have benefitted from additional contact by friends, neighbours, and perhaps family members.”

MacDonald tells us officers won’t forget this case anytime soon:

“Memories that are etched in your mind are often placed there because of the smells that you remember from different scenes and incidents. This one… the officers that were there were saying that will rank number one or number two in their memories.”

A person who looks after the man’s yard called police after he hadn’t heard from the senior in about a month. MacDonald says he has a long road ahead of him in the hospital.

He’s also urging people to check on elderly family members and neighbours regularly.
