Ugly summer means boost for some local businesses

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Mainly cloudy with a chance of showers and a high of 20 degrees; it’s not exactly the summer forecast we’ve all been dreaming of. But as the sub-par weather keeps many of us away from the beach, there is an upside for some local businesses.

Mike Gerla with Town and Country Lanes in Vancouver says the clouds and rain means the bowling alley has seen a boost in business. They are up to 30 per cent busier than this time last year.

“We are definitely up compared to most summers,” says Gerla. “The rainy days are good for us, unlike some places. So we like a little cloud and rain. Doesn’t hurt us at all.”

Amanda McCuaig with Science World says they have also been benefitting from the ugly summer. “Rainy days are always better than normal. So, we always do our anti-sun dance as kind of a joke here. [Last] Saturday, when it was really, really poring we saw twice the usual attendance.”

Movie theatres are also busy, but over at the Vancouver Aquarium, John Nightingale says the weather doesn’t have much of an impact saying, “people come here in both rainy and sunny weather.”
