BC firefighters helping out fellow crews in Ontario

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – They’re happy to finally be able to return the favor. News1130 caught up with a BC firefighter who is joined by almost 500 others battling massive forest fires in Ontario.

The terrain is a little different, says BC Forest Protection Officer Chris Betuzzi. “Generally a little flatter. Fuel types or the forest types are a little different, but they have had very dry conditions. Some of the fire behaviour is a little explosive.”

He says the thing that’s affecting the fires the most is the weather, which dries out the fuel a little faster than here in BC. More than 130 fires are burning in Ontario right now.

“Ontario [especially] has sent a lot of help our way so Ontario has received us well… and appreciates the help as well.”
