Heroes save woman who had a heart attack behind the wheel

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – Imagine having a massive heart while driving on the freeway, losing control of your car and blacking out. A 44-year-old mother of three from Langley has a couple of men to thank for saving her from that scenario.

A man named Courtney Smith saw the woman’s car clipping a barrier on Highway One near Brunette Ave. He pulled his car in front of hers, and managed to bring her to a stop.

Another man, Ron MacLeod, saw this all happening. RCMP Cpl. Annie Linteau says he pulled over to help. The two men used a tire iron to smash the windows of the woman’s car and get her out. “Right there, in the middle of the HOV lane, they proceeded to start CPR,” she says.

Linteau calls their actions heroic. “We truly believe that had it not been for the actions of those two motorists who stopped to help, she would not have survived.”

ICBC responds

As for whether Smith will have his insurance claim waived, Adam Grossman with ICBC says he can’t comment on specific claims. “In exceptional circumstances like this, we will make sure that our customers are cared for and their heroic actions are recognized.”

Smith’s car was badly damaged.
