CHICAGO, ILL (NEWS1130) – A Surrey man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend near Chicago. Dmitry Smirnov, 21, has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.
Jitka Vesel, 36, was shot more than ten times outside her office in April.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Smirnov told the court he did it “Because you can’t just expect to dump someone like that and ignore them for two years, and you expect to, you know, get away with it with no consequences. And just waste, you know, someone’s life like that.”
The two had met online, then Vesel put an end to the relationship back in 2008. Smirnov entered the States this past March, then drove through several states. He bought a gun in Washington State, then tracked Vesel down in Illinois using the Internet.
