Keeping the little ones safe this long weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The number of outdoor-type injuries treated at BC Children’s Hospital this summer is down, thanks to the cool weather.  However, doctors are still warning parents about safety because a couple of sunny days can change statistics and lives very quickly.

With the long weekend upon us, the advice includes wearing a helmet, if you’re going out for a bike ride.

Dr. Ian Pike says it can save your life if you wipe out.  “If you might skin a knee, you might hurt your wrist or an arm, but if your head hits the floor with a helmet on then you’ll be protected.”

He adds parents need to be especially aware of their children when around any open water.  “We advise arm’s length supervision and within sight at all times.  [We] advise parents that children should be wearing PFD’s and life-jackets whenever they’re in, on, or even around the water.”

Earlier this week, the hospital sent out a warning about the falling risk associated with unsecured doors and windows, after recent spike in injuries across Metro Vancouver.
