Twelve Canadians survive Guyana plane crash

American investigators will help probe Saturday’s crash landing of a Caribbean Airlines flight in Guyana.

Officials said the flight from New York overshot the 2,200-metre runway at Cheddi Jagan International Airport due to rainy weather.

The plane crashed and broke in half, but all 157 passengers and six crew members survived the ordeal.

ABC reports that pictures of the crash suggest the flaps on the ends of the wings may not have been deployed.

The flaps are responsible for slowing the plane down upon landing.

The black boxes have been recovered and the US National Transportation Safety Board is expected to head down to Guyana Sunday to help in the investigation.

There were 12 Canadians on board and one person suffered a minor injury.

The plane narrowly missed a ravine that Guyana President Bharrat Jadgeo said could have resulted in dozens of fatalities.
