Plea for blood donations this long weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As this BC Day long weekend draws to a close there’s a plea for blood donations.  National numbers are down so far this summer and it may have something to do with the unusual weather.

“We have seen for a couple of weeks this summer the inability to meet our targets, which is a bit concerning,” says Angela Poon with Canadian Blood Services.

She says summer is generally quite slow for donations, but this year seems to be worse than normal right across the country.

“We don’t know why that is; maybe the odd weather we’ve been seeing throughout Canada, some places are super hot and other places quite the opposite.”

“What that means is not that anyone is going without the blood that they need; it just brings down the buffer in our overall blood inventory in case of a crisis,” adds Poon.

So she’s sending out a reminder: a number of walk-in slots are still available at all clinics.  You can also book an appointment ahead of time, so you know exactly when you’ll be giving and you won’t have to wait.

“We’re not asking those people who are out of town on holidays, but those people who are at home and available, please think about giving blood this long weekend.”
