Motor Vehicle Sales Authority helps non-English speakers

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Buying a car can be challenging enough, imagine doing it if English isn’t your first language.

BC’s Motor Vehicle Sales Authority (VSA) is releasing three educational videos to help Mandarin, Cantonese and Punjabi speakers with the car buying process.

Peter McGee with the VSA says it’s all about spreading the word as widely as possible.

“Particularly the people with maybe difficulty with English, who don’t speak English at all, are often the most vulnerable in these kinds of major transactions,” he tells News1130.

He says people with limited language skills shouldn’t go to a car lot by themselves.

“If you’re going to a dealership and you do have trouble with English… bring someone, a loved on or a friend, along with you who maybe has a better grasp on the language,” he advises. ” I would say the biggest thing is to help that person understand exactly what they’re signing.”

Tips include buying cars only from licensed dealers. You can find the videos at http://www.mdcbc.com/vehicle-buying-tips-videos.htm
