Christy Clark’s approval rating rises to 42%: poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Premier Christy Clark would have been in pretty good shape if she decided to call a fall election, according to a poll released Tuesday.

It suggests her approval rating sits at about 42 per cent.

Mario Canseco with Angus-Reid says 40 per cent is usually the benchmark a politician wants to see before they call an election.

“Getting to 40 per cent is a very good number,” Canseco said. “Whoever is over 40 is doing well and whoever is under 40 isn’t really connecting with voters.”

The numbers show a pretty big jump from three months ago, when Clark had the support of just over one in three BC voters.

It’s also a major bump from the single-digit approval rating Gordon Campbell had before he left office.

However, Canseco understands why Clark is choosing to hold off on sending people to the polls.

“I think it was a good idea not to force an election at this point,” Canseco said. “Her rivals are still celebrating the outcome of the HST referendum.”

When she was campaigning for the Liberal leadership, Clark said she wanted to call an election quickly to get a mandate from the people.

That changed last week when she announced there won’t be an election until May, 2013.

Clark says she wants to spend the next year-and-a-half focusing on jobs.

Angus-Reid poll surveyed 807 British Columbians and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
