Canucks fans feeling good about new season

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It was an unforgettable run for the Stanley Cup, but with the wrong ending.  Faithful fans lined up around the block early this morning to get into Rogers Arena where the Vancouver Canucks held their first practice ahead of the upcoming season.

The majority of the crowd was optimistic, putting the past behind them.  However, one woman is a little afraid to dream big.  “Going through all that excitement, getting all that adrenaline going and then being deflated.  It’s hard to get your hopes up after that.”

“I was crying!” says one woman.  “But I have 100 per cent support for the Canucks and we believe this year, we can go all the way.  We’re not giving up.”

Most people say the sting of the last season’s loss still lingers, but they’re predicting another run to the Cup.

New glass

You may notice a slight change at Rogers Arena when you catch a game this year.  They’ve essentially removed the stanchion near the benches and have implemented a curved glass system.

The move was mandated by the NHL for all 30 arenas in the league, following last season’s hit on Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty by Boston Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara.

“We had obviously the pretty severe incident last year [and] I can’t really remember any major injuries that happened before that.  But sometimes one is all it takes and they took precautions and we’ll see if it works out,” says Canucks defenceman Kevin Bieksa.

The new system uses a curved piece of acrylic glass in combination with movable posts to protect both the players and fans.
