Former Athletes Village sees boost in business

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It was pretty empty for a while but the Village on False Creek, a.k.a. the former Olympic Athletes Village, is getting a shot of vitality today.

Vancouver bakery and café Terra Breads has opened its doors in the development’s plaza. Owner Michael Lansky says they were very careful about the location they chose.

“We’ve been interested in the Village for some years,” he says. “I see it as a prime location in Vancouver. It has a real neighbourhood feel. It’s got residential, shops and a beautiful community centre and it’s on the water.”

Realtor Bob Rennie says times were tough for a while but a TD Bank and Liquor Store are already there and more businesses are opening next year.

“The Village is not only sitting at 72 per cent occupied, but it’s being populated with retailers,” Rennie says. “London Drugs and Urban Fare have committed that they’ll open in the New Year.”

He’s not worried about the instability in the markets and the world’s economy.

“We’re seeing the homeowner and investor saying let’s take some money out of unstable markets and put it into this wonderful asset we call Vancouver.”

By early next week more condos at the Village are expected to go on sale.
