UBCM gets underway in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Money, policing and wildlife are expected to be big topics for local mayors as they meet in Vancouver for the annual Union of BC Municipalities Convention.

The idea for a municipal Auditor General to keep an eye on how cities spend your money will also be debated.  UBC President and Surrey City Councillor Barb Steele says it could use some more work.

“I think it probably should have been debated more and discussed more from the outset.  Things always work better when you sit down and discuss, like we did with the election reform, like we did with the community charter.  If you sit down and discuss it, it works a little bit better.”

She explains they’ll also debate urban wildlife as bears, cougars and other creatures show up on our streets, with many of them being shot and in some cases killed.

Premiers have been known to roll out major policy changes or friendly funding announcements at the UBCM Convention like when former Premier Gordon Campbell told delegates the tolls on the Coquihalla Highway would be nixed.

Steele adds she’s not holding her breath for a major gift from current Premier Christy Clark.  “I doubt there are going to be big money items just from the situation we’re in right now.  There may be surprises for us; there may be gifts of some description.”
