BC's population aging: Statistics Canada

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Fewer babies and more aging British Columbians add up to even more stress on some of our social systems.

News1130 is checking out the latest report on population growth by Statistics Canada. Just 40,000 more people were added to the province this July compared to last.

“It’s a little bit lower than in previous years, in fact in percentage… it is a little bit less than one per cent,” explains Gulien Berard-Chagnon with Statistics Canada.

He adds BC is the oldest province west of Quebec. “[There are] some impact on healthcare and retirement. Also issues regarding youth [such as] the number of schools. In fact, it is the only province west of Quebec where the number of people 65 years and over surpassed the number of children under the age of 15.”

Fourteen per cent of people in Canada are over 65; here in BC that number sits above 15 per cent.
