NHL cracking down on fake jerseys

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Headshots? Fighting? Forget about it! And you can now add fake hockey jerseys to the list of things the NHL is cracking down on.

The league wants to protect fans from cheaply-made merchandise and incorrect team colours and misspellings; They also want to ‘protect’ fans from paying $50 for what should be up to a $380 jersey!

The NHL sent officials to Montreal, which is a hotbed of counterfeit sports merchandise, to announce the crackdown. They say $1 million worth of fake jerseys have been seized in Canada and the US so far this year.

They are appealing to fans’ moral sense, saying most counterfeits are produced overseas in poor working conditions and can even have links to organized crime and terrorism.

Brand-protection company MarkMonitor tells the National Post it is an uphill battle for the NHL and other businesses; most people are wise to the fact that a bargain jersey is not the real deal.
