Teen who drunkenly assaulted bus driver given probation

By

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A provincial court judge has sentenced a teenager to a year’s probation for assaulting a bus driver last November.

The driver was viciously beaten by two teens who were clearly drunk when they got on his bus around 1 a.m.

At his sentencing, the teen was also told not to get on a bus if he’s drinking.

The driver suffered a concussion, cracked ribs and still deals with post traumatic stress.

He’s now in the process of switching careers and doesn’t plan on ever driving a bus again.

Gavin DeVries with the union representing bus drivers says there should mandatory minimum sentences in cases like this.

“It’s a joke,” he says. “There’s no deterrent there at all, and that’s the thing that’s most frustrating.”

Coast Mountain Bus company says there were 118 assaults on drivers in 2010, though not all of them were physical.

So far this year, there have been 86.
