New DNA readers will help cancer agency improve detection

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Cancer Agency’s Genome Sciences Centre will receive new DNA readers thanks to new funding from the feds and other sponsors.

The technology will help to decode DNA sequences a lot faster to improve research and cancer detection.

Information that may have taken months in the past will soon come back to them in as little as a couple of weeks, says VP of Research Dr. Samuel Abraham.

“The technology that we are investing in and the people that we are investing in doesn’t just touch cancer in this case,” he says. “It touches many other diseases and we have collaborations across mental health and into cardiac….and it serves as an attractive place therefore for industry to come and engage us in research and development.”

Those at the Genome Sciences Centre say over the past decade researchers have been involved in several ground-breaking discoveries.
